Ever dreamt of escaping to a charming Mediterranean town nestled in the heart of Majorca? Look no further than Soller, a hidden gem that’s about to become your new favourite holiday spot. Whether you’re travelling with the kids, your other half, or a group of mates, this all-in-one guide has got you covered. From sun-soaked beaches to mouth-watering tapas, we’ll show you the best of what Soller has to offer.
Nestled in a lush valley filled with orange trees and surrounded by the majestic UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tramuntana Mountains lies Soller. And thanks to its picturesque natural setting, charming old town, and deeply rich history, there are endless exciting things to see and do in Soller. You can even use it as your base to explore the surrounding towns and villages tucked within the mountains and the stunning beaches stretching along the coast.
The town itself is split into two: Soller town, with its old-world cobbled streets, situated just 3km from the ocean, and Port de Soller (also called Puerto de Soller), a beachside resort running along the shoreline of a truly breathtaking sheltered bay and its long sandy beach.
There are plenty of things you can do in this beautiful Mallorcan town, but to make it easier for you, we’ve listed down the must-dos and sees in Soller below.
Start your Soller adventure with a charming ride on the vintage tram. This century-old wooden tram, connects Soller to Port de Soller. It’s a delightful journey that winds through orange and lemon groves, offering picturesque views that will captivate anyone who gets on it.
The old tram, leaves from the station in Soller and takes you to the beach in Port de Soller in about half an hour. The price is 8 euros for a one way ticket. You can find the train schedule here.
You have to pay a visit to the Church of Sant Bartomeu (also known as the Parroquia de San Bartolomé). It’s a stunning landmark in the heart of town, and it’s been around for centuries! Marvel in its mindblowing mix of architectural styles – Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance – all coming together to create this amazing building.
You can climb to the top of the bell tower for some incredible views of the town and the countryside. The inside of the church is just as impressive, with ornate altars, religious art, and stunning stained glass windows. It’s located in Plaza Constitució, the main square, so you can’t miss it.
No holiday is complete without a beach day. Port de Soller boasts a beautiful horseshoe bay with calm, shallow waters ideal for little swimmers. Playa d’en Repic and Playa de Port de Soller are the two main beaches in the area. Build sandcastles, take a dip, or try your hand at paddleboarding or kayaking. The promenade lined with cafes and ice cream shops is perfect for a family stroll too.
You can even take boat trips from the harbour to explore other areas of Mallorca’s coast and visit remote coves. Many boats do coastal tours, including insights into the local ecology and sea life. A popular trip from Port de Soller goes through the Torrent de Pareis gorge to the cove of Sa Calobra. It’s a quiet place with blue water and steep cliffs, perfect for relaxing on the sand while taking in the great scenery.
Hiking is a hugely popular activity in and around Soller. The town has rightly earned a reputation as the hiking capital of Mallorca thanks to its excellent selection of scenic mountain trails. Trails cater for all ability levels and some are even suitable for mountain biking too, offering multi-use routes through stunning coastal and inland scenery.
Some classic hiking routes include the walk from Soller to Port de Soller along the coast, the Barranc de Biniaraix gorge trail, the route from Soller to the beautiful Cala Tuent beach, or the path linking Soller with the historic village of Fornalutx – all guarantee memorable scenery whether you’re an experienced hiker or casual rambler.
Soller is renowned for its oranges and exploring the vibrant groves surrounding the town is one of the highlights of any visit. While the orchards showcase their natural beauty all-year-round, the peak season to take in Soller’s citrus farms is during the harvest from December to March. The idyllic groves can be found within Soller itself but some also extend into the fertile Soller Valley, providing picturesque backdrops.
There are pleasant walking trails winding through the orange orchards. Many of the orange farms in Soller offer guided tours of their groves too, providing a great opportunity to learn more about how citrus fruits are cultivated in the region.
Soller’s culinary scene is a delightful blend of traditional Mallorcan flavours and innovative gastronomy. Whether you’re dining with family or enjoying a romantic evening, there’s something to satisfy every palate.
